The Borough of Chatham is located in Morris County, 21 miles west of New York City on the Mid-Town Direct rail line. Chatham Borough is well know for its outstanding school system, and easy commute into NYC. It is considered the suburb of choice, by many young professionals. Chatham Borough residents enjoy an above average socioeconomic level, with a high percentage of college graduates employed in professional occupations at the many nearby corporate headquarters, and in NYC.
Chatham Borough, which is approximately 2.5 square miles in area, has a population of near 8,200. Lot sizes vary between .15 to .40 of an acre. The predominate style of residential architecture is 1930s early American Colonials, that have been updated and expanded, and are well cared for.
Chatham Court, The Willows and The Chatham are the 3 townhouse and condominium communities in Chatham Borough.
Many of Chatham's residents have relocated from Hoboken, Jersey City and Manhattan, and commute daily to NYC on Mid Town Direct. It takes about 50 minutes. Parking at the train station can be difficult, and there are a limited number of spaces. However, the majority of homes in Chatham Borough are within walking distance to the train station. Newark Airport is just a 15 minute drive, and makes Chatham Borough an ideal town for travelers and corporate relocation professionals.
In July 2005, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Chatham ninth on its annual list of the 100 Best Places to Live in the United States. New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Chatham Borough as its 25th best place to live in its 2008 rankings of the "Best Places To Live" in New Jersey.
Chatham is served by a paid police force and a volunteer fire department, both of which maintain up-to-date equipment, sufficient to handle existing and anticipated demands. The Volunteer Chatham Emergency Squad serves both the Township, and the Borough of Chatham for medical emergencies. Chatham's infrastructure, recreational parks and ball fields are maintained by Borough employees.
Chatham Borough Schools & Homes
Chatham Borough and Chatham Township share the same school system. There are a total of six schools in the Chathams. Milton Avenue, Southern Boulevard and Washington Avenue Schools are for the public school students in kindergarten through third grade. Fourth and fifth grades attend the Lafayette School, and grades six to eight go to the Chatham Middle School.
Chatham High School is recognized nationally as an outstanding school. It was awarded No Child Left Behind - Blue Ribbon status in 2004 and consistently ranks as one of New Jersey's best schools. The vast majority of graduates attend college. Saint Patrick's is a private Catholic school, in Chatham Borough, for students in pre-kindergarten through grade eight.
Downtown Chatham has the feel of a New England village. Main Street is lined with quaint storefronts, shops, restaurants, cafes, and the town gazebo. Many residents are within an easy walking distance to town, schools and parks.
Real estate in Chatham Borough is very desirable, and the market has been consistently strong. The average price of a 3-4 bedroom house is currently $715,000. Prices for single family houses can range from $500,000 to $1.5 million. Townhouses and condos start around $300,000 and go up to $750,000.
Chatham Borough is a desirable upper-middle, to upper-class, town of well maintained properties, quaint tree lined streets and close knit neighborhoods.
